Description
The Praying Mantis, tenodera aridifolia sinensis, also known as the chinese mantis is one of the larger species in the mantis family. It can reach lengths of up to six inches. This photograph I took in my photo studio. I purchased this butterfly from a dealer in brooklyn. I wanted to see the the mantises reaction when I placed the butterfly on this cactus plant. Immediately he was very curious and agressive to investigate and lunged forward towards the butterfly. I had to react quick, removing the butterfly before he damaged it! They are extremely quick! If anyone wanted to catch one of them, the best way to do this is to extend your hand palm down and let them walk on the top of your hand so you could get a close up view of their face, eyes and very sharp claws. However if you tried picking them up grabbing their body you might get a little sting from those sharp little needle like spikes in their forearms, not such a good idea! You might have seen one of these little guys in your backyard! It is considered to be beneficial for the eco system in that it preys on other harmful insects that may destroy or damage any fruits, vegetables or plants that you may be trying to grow. Anyone having a garden should have a few of these little guys roaming around for some protection against other insect intruders that may be harmful to your'e crop, a must for any farmer! When I was a young boy (11 years old) I remember being told by someone that there was a $500.00 fine if anyone was caught killing it! I wonder what the fine or regulations are today! One of God's little creature's with a purpose, in the World of Nature we live in today!

It is so amazing that you captured such a shot. Even more amazing with the cactus and the colors! You certainly have a wonderful artistic eye to set up such a scene. Glad you saved the butterfly!
