Description
I Photographed this moth in my studio using a 140 macro lens and a #2 extension tube to bring me as close as I could get getting all the detail and beauty it has to offer. It was featured in the movie "Silence of the Lambs" starring Anthony Hopkins. The Death Head's Moths "skull pattern" can vary a bit. It has rich, defined wings and a fat body that is simply gorgeous, sometimes with a hint of blue in it. It's origin can be found in South Africa and South East Asia, sometimes migrating to the U.K. It's wingspan can vary from 102mm to 135mm. A very beautiful and unique type of moth. This moth has an unusual feature that it has the ability to emit a load squeak if irritated. The sound is produced by expelling aIr from the pharynx, often accompanied by flashing of the brightly colored abdomen in a further attempt to deter predators. They have also been observed raiding bee hives of different species of Honey Bee for honey. They can also move about in Hives without being disturbed because they mimic the scent of the bees. I hope everyone enjoys viewing this beautiful little creature as much as Idid photographing it. Enjoy, Leslie F. Crotty.
